NEW YORK (August 1, 2022) – An estimated six million patients have benefitted directly or indirectly from medical applications of additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing – from orthopedic and cranial implants to surgical guides and instruments to dental restorations and external prosthetics. The overall AM industry grew to $11.7 billion in 2021 with medical applications representing $1.62 billion, according to the 2022 Wohlers Report. To further accelerate medical AM applications and patient care, Metrix, an ASME company, will host the AM Medical Summit, powered by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Nov. 2-3, at the Convention Center in Minneapolis, home to the highest concentration of medical device companies in the world.
Bringing together medical device manufacturers, point-of-care manufacturers (hospitals), dental and 3D bio-fabrication professionals, the AM Medical Summit is co-located with Advanced Manufacturing Minneapolis, the region’s most comprehensive medical design and manufacturing event and part of Advanced Manufacturing Minneapolis, an annual design and manufacturing event for professionals in a variety of industries. Attendees pay one price for admission to both events.
“We’re excited to bring the innovation of additive manufacturing to Informa’s manufacturing audience,” says Deborah Holton, president of Metrix, an ASME company. “Attendees will have access to in-depth medical AM discussions and can explore other tools including modeling, simulation, and planning through the combined Metrix and Informa events.”
The AM Medical Summit features “Live Lab” programming, an immersive experience with hands-on technology demonstrations and in-depth discussions on the complete AM ecosystem, including 3D imaging, design, materials, processes, post processing, and quality. Participants include experts from ARMI|BioFabUSA, GE Healthcare, Geisinger Health System, Johnson & Johnson, KLS Martin, Mayo Clinic, Stryker, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and other leading organizations. Attendees can join panel discussions including:
- “Patient Impact: Understanding the Perspective of those Benefiting from 3D Printing” to hear from just a few of the millions of patients whose lives have been directly impacted by these technologies
- “Innovative Medical Applications” for a speed round of short case studies that illustrate the resourcefulness and creativity of the AM medical community, and where attendees are invited to cast their vote for best application of technology with a focus on patient care
- “Medical Supply Chains and Additive Manufacturing,” a conversation about how professionals can manage qualification and the potential variation within the medical device supply chain using AM and plan for the future of supply chains and possible distributed manufacturing – a key enabler to both patient-specific devices and bio printed tissues.
