In its commitment to drive stereolithography performance to the cutting edge for additive manufacturing, DSM is collaborating with original equipment manufacturers to develop materials that provide true thermoplastic performance.
Most recently, DSM’s Somos® Stereolithography Materials Group teamed up with Toyota Motorsport GmbH to develop materials to withstand the rigors of “24 Hours of Le Mans” for the FIA World Endurance Championship in Le Mans, France.
“Somos® Materials provide the stereolithography community with a variety of resins with performance benefits to fit just about every application with speed and precision,” said Kelly Hawkinson, Global Marketing Manager, DSM Functional Materials. “We were thrilled to experience 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Toyota team. We work closely with our customers to provide solutions that work best for everyone through partnerships such as Toyota.”
Based in Cologne, Germany, Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) offers design, development, testing and production services to the Toyota family, as well as external, independent clients with wind tunnel services, engine testing and electric vehicle development. TMG runs 10 stereolithography machines with a large capacity to handle a multitude of requests to deliver wind tunnel parts and even actual bodywork for the TS030 HYBRID, which raced at Le Mans.
According to TMG, the parts they produced using DSM’s latest Somos® Materials provide high-precision, high-modulus, and temperature-resistant properties ideal for wind tunnel testing. TMG also runs the high-impact resistant material Somos® NeXt, that is rapidly gaining acceptance for both prototyping and direct manufacturing within the automotive industry.
“We were excited to have the Somos® Materials Group join us at the Le Mans race to see what their products provide us. We have been extremely pleased with the results and quality they deliver our team,” said Alastair Moffitt, Marketing and Communications Manager, Toyota Motorsport GmbH.
Through the dedication and collaboration of DSM and Toyota Motorsport, endurance racing will continue to rise to new heights of speed, safety and efficiency.
