GE’s mission is to improve electrical distribution by finding and producing truly innovative and user-friendly electrical advancements and technologies.
General Electric (GE) manufactures molded case circuit (MCC) breakers for electrical applications and is investing in innovative new product development approaches designed to accelerate time to market and improve usability.
The Challenge
NineSigma, representing the General Electric Company, seeks truly innovative designs for an attractive user-friendly, ergonomic rotary handle accessory for its molded case circuit breaker. The handle serves two essential user interface functions–to operate the breaker and signal status to the user.
For a fresh, new, next-generation breaker design, General Electric seeks designs for an attractive and ergonomic rotary handle. The existing MCC breaker has a linear motion toggle with three positions: ON, OFF, and TRIP. Designs should address the interest of those users who prefer rotary switches instead of the linear toggle.
The new, user-friendly design must provide a mounted mechanism that converts between the linear motion of the toggle and the rotary motion of the handle. This conversion mechanism should also allow remote mounting the rotary handle at some distance from the MCC breaker and mounting the breaker for access through a door.
This challenge offers an opportunity to become a collaborator/supplier to General Electric, with initial cash prizes of US $10,000 each, awarded to five respondents for top-ranked proposals.
About the Challenge
General Electric will supply scale CAD files for base MCC breaker upon which to base your design.
Participants will create a design, complete the proposal template, and submit their design and proposal by July 15, 2014. The completed document will serve as an introduction to the respondent’s design and expertise.
An internal team of GE representatives will evaluate all received proposals for technical merit, aesthetics, and economic viability. The team will select the five proposals whose submitters will each receive a US $10,000 cash prize. Find out More>> Visit
