SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly will host the Haas Technical Education Center (HTEC) Americas CNC Educators Training Conference from July 27-30.

    California Polytechnic State University
    San Luis Obispo, California, USA
    July 27-30, 2015

The conference is sponsored by the HTEC Network, an industry-led initiative that enables manufacturing technology educators and their schools to acquire the latest computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, software and educational materials. HTEC aims to provide students with a high-tech, hands-on education in order to graduate work-ready engineers and innovators who will lead the U.S. global competitiveness in manufacturing and product realization technologies.

Conference events open to the public and the media include a welcome address by Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong; keynote talks by Carl Bass, president and CEO of Autodesk, and Meghan Summers-West, president of CNC Software; and a vendor exhibition featuring more than 40 high-tech manufacturing companies.

“We are indebted to Haas Automation and the Gene Haas Foundation for bringing this important event to Cal Poly,” said Jose Macedo, chair of Cal Poly’s Industrial & Manufacturing Department. “Haas has supported our students for 20 years, providing scholarships, CNC machines and tools, and sponsoring our advanced manufacturing and automation labs. We consider Haas a partner in Cal Poly’s effort to become the nation’s premiere provider of advanced manufacturing professionals.”

    About Haas Automation
Headquartered in Oxnard, Calif., Haas Automation, one of the largest machine tool builders, manufactures computer numerically controlled (CNC) vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, CNC lathes/turning centers and CNC rotary tables and indexers. Gene F. Haas founded the company in 1983, providing the machine tool industry with a fully automatic, programmable collet indexer – a device used to position parts for machining with high accuracy. In 1987, Haas Automation began developing its first vertical machining center (VMC), a machine designed to perform operations such as milling, drilling, tapping, and boring. The first VF-1 prototypes were completed in 1988 and introduced at the International Machine Tool Show (IMTS ’88) in Chicago.

    About Carl Bass
Carl Bass is president and chief executive officer of Autodesk, a leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software. Bass co-founded Ithaca Software, which was acquired by Autodesk in 1993. Since joining the company, he has held several executive positions including chief technology officer and chief operations officer. Bass serves on the boards of directors of Autodesk, Quirky and E2open; on the board of trustees of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; and on the advisory boards of Cornell Computing and Information Science, UC Berkeley School of Information and UC Berkeley College of Engineering. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Cornell University. Bass is a maker and spends his spare time building things—from chairs and tables to boats, and most recently, an electric go-kart.

    About Meghan Summers-West
Summers-West earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Bentley College and a Master of Business Administration in Management from Hawaii Pacific University. She officially joined CNC Software in 2009 as operations manager and was named president in April 2015. In 2014, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers named Summers-West one of the “30 Under 30 Future Leaders of Manufacturing.” CNC Software Inc. was established in 1983 to provide an inexpensive PC-based CAM system at a time when most other systems were expensive CAD-oriented products. Its flagship product, Mastercam, is the most widely used CAM system in the market today.
