DEARBORN, Mich., April 5, 2017 ― 2017 SME International Honor Awards will go to six international leaders from across the manufacturing industry and academia. Honorees will receive their awards April 30 during SME’s International Awards Gala in Chicago.
SME International Honor Award winners are recognized for their significant contributions in the areas of manufacturing technologies, processes, technical writing, education, research and management, and service to SME.
“Representing both advanced manufacturing and academia, these International Award honorees are accomplished, recognized leaders,” said SME CEO Jeff Krause. “They exemplify vision, commitment and achievement – we’re pleased and proud to recognize them.”

Yoshimaro Hanaki, Okuma Corp. Aichi, Japan
Recognized with the 2017 Eli Whitney Productivity Award for his contributions to the research and development of CNC systems and CNC machine tools.
Wayne Orr, Blanchat Machine Co. (Retired), Wichita, Kansas
Recipient of the 2017 Joseph A. Siegel Service Award in recognition of his 60 years of SME leadership, mentorship and support for individuals, chapters and regions.
John C. Ziegert, PhD, FSME, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina
Recognized with the 2017 SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal for his significant contributions to manufacturing science.
David L. Bourell, PhD, The University of Texas at Austin Department of Mechanical Engineering, Austin, Texas
Honored with the 2017 SME Albert M. Sargent Progress Award for his fundamental and applied research on additive manufacturing materials, their subsequent industrial use and the publications that share the associated knowledge.
Robert B. Habingreither, EdD, CMfgE, Texas State University College of Science & Engineering, San Marcos, Texas
Recipient of the 2017 SME Education Award in recognition of his 38 years of dedicated service to higher education, the profession of manufacturing engineering and engineering in general, as well as the education of countless young professional manufacturing engineers throughout his distinguished career.
S. Jack Hu, PhD, Vice President for Research, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Honored with the 2017 SME Gold Medal in recognition of intellectual leadership in inventing novel algorithms and practical methodologies for multistation assembly systems and their implementation in industry, as well as his influential service to government and the manufacturing profession.
