High performance car, innovative manufacturing method, world record: Bugatti breaks the 300-mph barrier. The Chiron world record car is fitted with an innovative exhaust finisher that is produced by APWORKS.
Frankfurt, Germany – November 19, 2019 – APWORKS, a leading industrial provider of 3D printing services and products, is pleased to announce that the record-breaking Bugatti Chiron derivative is equipped with innovative 3D printed exhaust finishers produced by APWORKS. This car is the first hyper sports car to break the magic 300-mile-per-hour barrier (482.80 km/h). A world record that was set at the beginning of August in Germany.
The innovative exhaust finishers applied in the Bugatti Chiron were produced out of Titanium using Additive Manufacturing. The pair of exhaust finishers are part of the modified longer tail section and are designed to push the exhaust emissions further from the rear end of the car to reduce turbulence and improve steering behavior at high speeds. The design freedom offered by additive manufacturing enabled optimized exhaust aerodynamics resulting in increased downforce and enhanced high speed handling of the car. In addition to the aerodynamic benefits, the low mass of the parts contributes to the exceptional acceleration of the car. Titanium material is best suited to this application as it combines high strength, heat resistance and low weight. This is a prime example of an optimized high-performance part enabled by additive manufacturing.
The pre-production Bugatti Chiron derivative is the first hyper sports car to break the magic 300- mile-per-hour barrier (482.80 km/h). At the same time, Bugatti has set a new TÜV-certified speed record with 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h). Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace reached the top speed of exactly 490.484 km/h (304.773 mph) on August 2, 2019 on the test track at Ehra-Lessien in Lower Saxony.
“Congratulations to Bugatti on the world record. We from APWORKS are proud to be part of this amazing project, having produced the innovative exhaust finishers. The pair of finishers impress by the combination of lightweight, high performance material and optimized emission flow. A functional styling that exceeds limits and enables incredible performance.” says Joachim Zettler Managing Director of APWORKS.
“Bugatti has once again shown what it’s capable of. With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory. Never before has a series manufacturer reached this high speed,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. “Our goal was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300-mile-per-hour mark. We have now achieved this – making ourselves, the entire team and myself, incredibly proud.”
The exhaust finisher will be presented and showcased by APWORKS during formnext 2019. Please stop by the APWORKS booth (hall 11.1, booth C71) to see the part live.
