W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. July 19, 2021 – Interested parties are invited to participate in the development of a proposed ASTM International standard that will address quality requirements for additive manufacturing (AM) in building and construction. The proposed standard will have a specific focus on structural and infrastructure elements. ASTM International’s additive manufacturing technologies committee (F42) is developing the proposed standard.
ASTM International member Stephan Mansour says that the range of material covered by the proposed standard will include cement, compound, and adobe-based. It will not address metal and/or polymer-based materials.
“With all the environmental, efficiency, and productivity benefits of construction AM, the lack of international standards is hindering adoption of the approach as a common tool in every construction project,” says Mansour. “The proposed standard will specify the criteria for AM processes, quality-relevant characteristics, and factors along the process chain.”
Mansour notes that the proposed standard (WK77614) will define activities and sequences within an AM site or project. The standard will be useful for all AM technologies in building and construction of structural and infrastructure building elements for residential and commercial applications and follows an approach oriented to the manufacturing process.
Architects and engineers, 3D printing technology providers, and general contractors will all find the proposed standard useful.
This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
Mansour says that the subcommittee developing WK77614 is looking for a broader base of participation in its development, particularly in 3D and architectural design, safety, and sustainability.
